And for my fellow feminists who are concerned that the word slut and provocative outfits display female compliance with patriarchal norms,
know this: the liberation lies in the ability to choose.
AMBER ROSE SLUT WALK LOS ANGELES: STOP POLICING WOMEN'S BODIES.
In the heart of Downtown Los Angeles on Olive and 6th street, a flood of women take over street and sidewalk. The crowd has stepped out of the once narrow lanes, and an ardent color palette of hot pink, white, and black spills onto the asphalt. Fishnets, breast petals, and underwear make up a majority of the outfits. Among countless signs, one message persists: Still not asking for it.
It’s one thing to talk shop and equality with feminists and activists; it’s another to see how retrograde notions of femininity are being redefined in the physical world. SlutWalk: a term that may be jarring at first, but that is what is essential to the movement. Shock factor and bluntness are integral to the uninhibited nature of SlutWalk: wielding the power to define female behavior and appearance on one’s own terms lies in reclaiming the word.
The lottery of "indecency" will nearly always run against your favor, whether that's "too submissive" or "shameless."
And for my fellow feminists who are concerned that the word slut and provocative outfits display female compliance with patriarchal norms, know this: the liberation lies in choice.
