Timely & Timeless: The Met’s Roman Bead Collection

  • February 21, 2019

The Met’s new Roman Bead Collection is an ode to all that is timely and timeless. With their oversized scale and simple yet bold proportions, these pieces would fit right in at a contemporary fashion show—yet they’re almost two millennia old.

T
he apparel world can learn a lot about sustainability from the jewelry world.

There’s a quality to jewelry that lends itself to sustainability: universal appeal, a conscious investment in precious metals, to the common practice of passing pieces from generation to generation.

I’m against the idea that fashion needs to change to remain significant. It’s only a matter of time before fashion reaches a boiling point—trends move so fast and are so cyclical today that it’s inevitable that at some point soon the pendulum is going to swing, and we will long for things that last again.

The Met Store’s new Roman Bead collection is a prime example of all that is timely and timeless. The new collection offers a fresh take on the ancient world, with semiprecious stones that dazzle.

With their oversized scale and simple yet bold proportions, these pieces would fit right in at a contemporary fashion show—yet they’re almost two millennia old.

Every piece contains semiprecious fair-trade stones from Chile, Brazil, the Rocky Mountains, featuring lapis, fossilized coral, and turquoise beads.

Christopher Lightfoot, Curator of Greek and Roman Art at The Met Museum, explains that rock crystal was a rare and exotic material in antiquity, used for both jewelry and highly prized vessels. They typify the sort of rather simple but elegant jewelry that women found attractive during that period.

Instagram post 2198385432332827014_263172661 A lot of you have been asking about this new stunner on my neck. Thanks, it's from @alkimee! ✨⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Most people focus on diamonds as the cornerstone violation of human rights in the jewelry industry, but gold mining can be an equally exploitative process: from black market dealers to the improper use of chemicals without safety precautions.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
That’s why knowing the source of your gold, or using recycled gold, is so important! ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
@Alkimee creates ethical jewelry using recycled and fairmined metals, meaning responsibly mined by artisanal and small-scale miners. They work with miners that are paid fair market rates AND paid a premium that is invested into developing their worker cooperatives and communities. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
If you use my code ADIMAY, Alkimee will donate a minimum of 25% of profits made on any sales to the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM). ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
ARM works to transform the artisanal mining sector into a socially and environmentally responsible activity, while improving the quality of life of artisanal miners, their families & communities through initiatives such as their Fairmined certification program. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
The 14K Fairmined gold used to produce my अदिति necklace (Aditi in Hindi) came from the Iquira and La Coqueta mines in Columbia. What a stunner, no? ✨⁣

Instagram post 2189728713171912730_263172661 It's the season of creating ✨ A few weeks ago, I downloaded @BumbleBizz in pursuit of seeking meaningful relationships with folks aligned in similar professions and passions. #BumblePartner ⁣
⁣
Since then, I've been able to connect with multiple creatives, and have been able to not only to talk shop, but also find folks that are introducing me to new crafts. It's been an important reminder to create simply for the sake of creating— an important act for all artists (reminder: your creativity deserves to exist without pressures of monetization). ⁣ ⁣
Bumble Bizz has allowed me to find a community that has reconnected with the power of play when it comes to creativity, picking up new hobbies like painting. 🎨⁣

Instagram post 2187300080746531731_263172661 Black Friday can be an important time for people to get access to certain items they wouldn’t be otherwise afford, but it’s important to approach this season with intention. ⁣
Some questions to guide you: ⁣
⁣
Do I need it? ⁣
Would I buy it if it wasn’t on sale? ⁣
Will it last? ⁣
Who made it? ⁣
Why am I buying this? ⁣
⁣
Campaign for a fashion industry that values people and planet over profit— support sustainable and ethical labels, BIPOC owned brands, secondhand pieces, small businesses and local artisans. ⚡️ #TakeBackBlackFriday
Instagram post 2186643727124273937_263172661 ’Tis the season when your Instagram stories are bombarded with influencers telling you to 🆘🔥SWIPE UP TO SHOP THE HOTTEST SALE OF SEASON🔥🆘
⁣
Here’s a little reminder to…⁣
⁣
1. Relax your brows⁣
2. Let your tongue fall from the roof of your mouth⁣
3. Unclench your jaw⁣
4. Let your shoulders fall away from your ears⁣
5. Opt-out of a culture that tells you that your self worth / self care / happiness is tied to your consumption ⁣
⁣
It’s so easy, and so human, to feel some major FOMO when you’re surrounded by messages claiming that you need to take advantage of these amazing deals on items that will make your life better. But here’s a reminder that you’re surviving without the excess. Be mindful this season. ⁣
⁣
Carry on. 🙃

⁣
I've recently downloaded @BumbleBizz in hopes of finding a community of like-minded trailblazers. Take the weirdness out of networking, one connection at a time. ⁣
⁣
The app was created to facilitate the kind of professional connections that will not only help users’ careers for the better, but their general lives. So whether you're looking for your next job, mentor, or like-minded folk to enjoy your passions with (any backyard farmers in the house? 👩🏽‍🌾), this is an app for you. ⁣
⁣
Stay posted on the journey— and in the meantime, download @Bumble and #MaketheFirstMove to find your own community. Who knows, maybe I'll be able to connect with some of you on the app? #ad ⁣
