When traveling abroad, some things will stop you in your tracks and echo home. Meeting Mohanjeet Grewal was one of these moments. Maybe it was the familiar Punjabi name amidst countless Parisian boutiques you couldn’t pronounce. Maybe it was

The critique of “fast fashion” is quite clear— a regime that says pile it high, sell it cheap and hang the consequences. On the other hand, the ethical fashion industry has it’s own share of criticisms: from associations with gaudy grandma aesthetics, to an all too familiar Western Savior Complex in every marketing campaign. The critique of “fast fashion” is

Rome has never been a mere city. Instead, it’s been an infinitely romantic notion, a nexus between all things love, history, power; an idea of the beyond. An extension of the “one day I’ll travel to” dream. Yet, here we are… Rome has never been a mere city. Instead it’s been an infinitely romantic notion, a nexus between all things

Digital postcards and post trip reflections by way of La Paz and it’s wonders. Here’s a set of imagery from the glorious La Paz that’s been sitting on my visual backlog for a few weeks now. I’ve strayed away from publishing any posts: 1) lack of sufficient Internet connection, 2) Days busy with research projects via data collection and community

Beyond the popular notion of the blogging world as an overtly saturated,  face value driven, capitalist sell-out circus, can our digital spaces serve as political statements? B eyond the popular notion of the blogging world as an overtly saturated, face value driven, capitalist sell-out circus (all arguably true – but that’s a whole different discussion), there is the domain of

  • There’s a new week in town: Vegan Fashion Week. While veganism isn’t central to my platform, shout outs to the creator behind #VFW, @veganfashionstylist, for allowing this event to be a space where individuals from various backgrounds come to engage with a more ethical industry (beyond just animal rights). Had a great time talking about building workers rights, pushing corporate accountability, and the interwoven ties between environmental impact and marginalized communities. “Cruelty-free” needs to encompass not just animal rights, but human rights as well. Nevertheless, this new frontier is important for setting the tone for the alphabet soup of Fashion Weeks to come. Dear NYFW, LFW, MFW, PFW: you betta work!

  • As if Fashion Month wasn't niche enough of an event as it is, it's getting even more nuanced: Vegan Fashion Week has come to Los Angeles. Peep my story for more behind the scenes ✨
  • Responsible fashion has been central to my work for some time now, and in 2019, I’ll be creating more content about responsible travel.

And by that, I don’t mean staying in luxury yoga retreats around the world wearing elephant pants. More than just commodifying wellness.
I want more dialogues around things like…  displacement of local communities, deconstructing the Orientalist gaze, to defining “Home” as a daughter of the diaspora.
TLDR; Whose ready for some WOC-led, beyond-luxury-yoga-retreat, anti-Orientalist-travel content in 2019? 🙋🏽‍♀️✈️
  • Resist the depoliticized, sanitized, ahistorical King.
In this celebratory moment of King’s life and death, we should be suspicious of those who sing MLK’s praises, yet refuse to pay the cost of embodying King’s strong indictment of the US empire and racism in their own lives.
Beyond reposting MLK quotes today, take a moment to actively support Black folk in America and around the world: @innocenceproject @blklivesmatter @nationalbailout @blackgirlscode [Images by #FlipSchulke]
  • Meet Mohanjeet y’all. This last summer I spent a hot minute in Paris shooting a documentary about her.

Two years ago while backpacking I met Mohanjeet— a baddie/fellow Punjaban who disrupted the Parisian fashion landscape in the 60s. Her Indian-centric aesthetic was creating with the intention of shifting the idea of Indian garments being “cheap” while challenging simplified dichotomies of a “modern” vs “traditional” woman through clothing. You all already know the politics of fashion are my cup of tea, and I was ecstatic.
But the story shifted— when I asked her why she started her label. “Survival,” she said. And then followed a month of exploring themes of South Asian womanhood & expectation, the meaning of Home as a diasporic subject, and identity: the ultimate work in progress.
Here we are looking reaaal cute on our last day of shooting 👯‍♀️ [Documentary Release: TBD— but any interested souls, from editors, music makers, etc— shoot me a line 🍦] #ADIMAY
